How to Make a Care Package

When you can’t see a loved one regularly, finding ways to show them that you care can be challenging. Care packages can be thoughtful and valuable ways to support a loved one from afar. Scroll down to learn how to make a care package for someone in an assisted living community.

How to Make a Care Package

Spending quality time with a loved one is a great way to show them how much you care about them. Unfortunately, we’re not always able to be there in person with someone every time we want them to know they’re loved. If you’re looking for ways to show your love to someone living in an assisted living community, a care package is sure to brighten their day. Do you know how to make a care package that your loved one will enjoy?

What’s in a Care Package?

What kinds of things should you put in a care package? In many ways, it’s up to you! If it fits in a box, you can send it to someone you love. However, if you want to make sure it’s a present they’ll be excited about, it’s a good idea to personalize it to your loved one’s tastes. What kinds of things do seniors like to receive in care packages? If you aren’t sure what to include in a care package, consider these questions:

  • What does my loved one enjoy? What are their hobbies and interests?
  • What does my loved one need? Can I think of anything that would make their life easier?
  • What would brighten their day? What kinds of treats and tokens of appreciation can show them I care?

Entertainment

One of the most popular items to include in senior care packages is items that can provide a little entertainment throughout the day. You can ensure your senior will love what you send by personalizing those entertainment items to their tastes. If your loved one is a puzzle fan, a book of crossword puzzles or sudoku will provide mental stimulation. If your loved one has a lot of hobbies, hobby supplies are always appreciated. And if they like to kick back and relax, nothing livens up an afternoon like an excellent large-print book.

Practical Items

Entertainment is fun, but personal items are also a great way to show a senior you’re thinking of them. Items like hand lotion and chapstick are always appreciated, as are comfort items like warm slippers and fuzzy blankets. You can also think of small practical items to make their lives easier. For example, if your senior loved one is a reader, they might appreciate a book light or a magnifier. Even simple noise-canceling earbuds can make a senior’s life more enjoyable.

Treats and Snacks

Did you know that familiar tastes and smells can provide a source of mental stimulation for seniors, especially those with dementia or other age-related memory issues? Sending seniors their favorite snacks and treats can bring back happy memories and spark joy. Easy-to-eat snacks like granola bars or microwave popcorn can also help seniors get the nutrition they need during the day and give them a little treat.
