Spring Cleaning Tips

Have you been avoiding spring cleaning this year? The first day of summer is right around the corner – June 21, 2019 – and you might find it helpful to use that date as a convenient deadline for spring cleaning as we inch toward the tail end of spring. An annual cleaning in the spring can refresh your home, eliminate germs, and help you move forward with a fresh outlook on life. Plus, who wants to spend their summer cleaning? For help getting started, use the spring cleaning tips below.

Spring Cleaning Tips

Make a list of must-do tasks.

Every home is different, so it’s important that you take a look around your own home to decide which cleaning tasks are overdue. Remember that spring cleaning is typically a time for deep-cleaning tasks, not frequent chores (like wiping down countertops). Martha Stewart recommends that you complete the following tasks each spring:

  • Wipe the walls and ceilings
  • Reseal grout lines
  • Vacuum and shampoo rugs
  • Dust books and shelves
  • Clean upholstered furnishings
  • Polish metal hardware on doors and windows
  • Dust hard-to-reach places (tops of ceiling fans, window casings, etc.)
  • Wax wooden furniture
  • Ensure fire safety
  • Wash window screens
  • Clean window treatments
  • Wax non-wood floors

Stock up on essentials.

It’s incredibly frustrating when you’re mentally prepared to complete a strenuous task, but you can’t because you don’t have the necessary supplies. So before you begin your spring cleaning session, look at your to-do list, pull out your current stash of cleaning supplies, and figure out which items need to be replaced or restocked.

Plan your playlist.

Cleaning is much more fun when you play music or a podcast in the background. As you scrub the floors or wipe down your windows, you can lose yourself in the music. Before you know it, you’ll be finished! Depending on where you’ll be cleaning, you could also watch (but mostly listen to) a movie or TV show.

Start with de-cluttering.

A disorganized home is a major source of stress for many Americans. Plus, it’s more difficult to clean! So do yourself a favor and start the cleaning process by de-cluttering your space. Set aside items you no longer want or need and decide whether they should be thrown in the trash, recycled, donated, sold, or given to a friend or family member.

Work from top to bottom.

If you’re not sure where to start, look up. Do you need to clean your walls or your ceiling? What about your ceiling fans and light fixtures? Picture frames? The space above your cabinets? By starting at the top, you’ll force dust and debris downward, to other surfaces or to the floor. As you clean those other surfaces, the remaining dust and debris will move to the floor. And when you reach the last stage of the process and clean the floors and rugs, you’ll remove all the remaining dust and debris. This saves you time by preventing repeat cleanings of certain areas.

When you reach the end of your cleaning session, especially if you used our spring cleaning tips, treat yourself to some fresh flowers. They’ll brighten up the room and showcase all of your hard work!
