Things to Do with Family in Memphis

Children’s Museum of Memphis

Featuring hands-on exhibits, playful programs, and interactive areas, the Children’s Museum of Memphis is a great place for families of all ages to explore. It includes a flight simulator, a hot air balloon, a wind tunnel, the cockpit of a real plane, an art studio, a disco dance room, a kid’s grocery store, and more.

The Big Backyard at the Botanic Gardens

A family garden, the Big Backyard at the Botanic Gardens allows kids to climb, build things, make music, and splash around on hot days. Because some of the features rotate based on the season, there is always something new to explore. Plus, admission is included with entry to the Botanic Garden.

March of the Peabody Ducks

A charming and elegant hotel known for its Southern hospitality, the Peabody is a lovely place to stay during your visit. But even if you don’t book a room, stop by at 11am or 5pm to watch the five resident Mallard ducks march through the Grand Lobby for a swim in the fountain. It’s a silly, fun, and very unique tradition.

Shelby Farms Park

The largest urban park in the United States, Shelby Farms has something for everyone: horseback riding, bike trails, playgrounds, fishing, space to fly kites, and more. On a nice day, you can’t beat Shelby Farms Park.

National Civil Rights Museum

No matter what your age, you will learn something new at the Civil Rights Museum. The exhibits and displays offer a moving and educational experience, telling the story of America’s civil rights history. The museum is very well organized and informative as well, stretching from the transatlantic slave trade to modern events.

Memphis Zoo

What kid doesn’t enjoy a trip to the zoo? More than 3,500 animals call the Memphis Zoo home, from penguins and pelicans to komodo dragons and a baby orangutan (born on March 19, 2016). To view the entire property, plan to spend three to five hours at the park, and if you have trouble getting around, consider taking a guided tram tour for a small fee. The zoo also hosts events like Zoo Boo (for Halloween) and Zoo Lights (for Christmas).
